TriAx provides subgrade improvement while optimizing pavement structure.
Wellington County Road 29 is approximately 900 metres long and falls between Side Road 10 and Highway 7 in Guelph-Eramosa, Ontario. The road is comprised of two lanes, 9 metres wide, with asphalt paved roads and gravel shoulders. A low lying wetland borders the section of the road to the northeast.

The existing pavement in the northbound lane of Wellington County Road 29 was beginning to show longitudinal cracking and wheel rutting. It was determined that this problem was directly related to the peat and organic soil deposits underlying the road embankment.
Nilex recommended the County of Wellington leave the peat and organics in place, add a layer of TriAx for subgrade improvement and further optimize the pavement structure with an additional layer of TriAx. This would create a Mechanically Stabilized Layer (MSL). Nilex also provided non-woven geotextile fabric to be used as a separator between the subgrade and imported gravel to prevent the fines from mixing with the gravel but still allow water to pass between them.
Nilex was on-site at start-up to assist with the installation process. Over 5,000 m3 of peat and organic materials stayed in place and was diverted from going to the landfill, reducing excavation and trucking requirements. The installation was completed by a crew of 7 and required minimal equipment.
Nilex provided the client with a solution that improved the subgrade which was required to build over the peat and organic materials. The pavement optimization with the MSL reduced the amount of gravel being used while providing better performance. The client was able to save over $27,000 in gravel alone and the ease of installation allowed additional cost savings on trucking, excavating and maintenance.
