The University of Colorado (CU-Boulder) is located in Boulder along the eastern edge of the Flatiron Mountains. Thirty miles outside of Denver, the University is committed to building a 21st century learning environment while being a leader in sustainability.

The recreation center at the University was upgrading its parking area at the same time that CU-Boulder’s Football Stadium was being redeveloped.

The parking lot was located between the recreation center and a 150 foot drop off that was created by a natural change in elevation. This made any installation challenging due to a lack of space on the site. In addition to the site constraints, the client wanted an easily installed, cost-effective solution that would retain and release water at the same rate as the pre-developed site.


Nilex provided Stormwater Chambers which are an economical alternative to conventional stormwater retention systems such as ponds, swales and pipe. The Stormwater Chambers allow for maximum infiltration of water into the ground, while the placement of the chambers beneath the parking lot provides a viable water management solution without sacrificing land area.


The Stormwater Chambers were installed in a trench configuration in accordance with site restrictions. Only one excavator was required to dig the trench while a crew of four were able to easily move the Stormwater Chambers into place by hand. This reduced the requirement for large equipment within the limited construction space.


Nilex provided a water management solution that capitalized on space, allowed for greater runoff storage and maximized the number of parking stalls on the property. The installation required less equipment, manpower and crushed stone than conventional systems. Using Nilex’s recommended stormwater chambers resulted in a lower carbon footprint and greater cost savings.
