Biaxial Geogrid increases the strength and lifespan of a road.

The Talbot Wind Farm is a 103.5 MW wind energy project constructed on approximately 9,000 acres of private agricultural land in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. The site is located along Talbot Trail near the town of Ridgetown, between Highway 401 and the shore of Lake Erie. Access to the site is straightforward, with equally spaced roads running across the wind farm area.

The intended lifespan of the wind farm is 20 years. The access roads developed for the site needed to withstand construction traffic, including heavy equipment and then last for the next 20 years with minimal  maintenance. Soil conditions on the site were poor, requiring significant base stabilization for the roads.


Nilex, in conjunction with Tensar International recommended using Biaxial (BX) Geogrids and nonwoven geotextile in the construction of the access road base. Biaxial geogrids are used to provide a stable road foundation. They are designed to reduce construction induced or in-service stresses applied to weak subgrades. Biaxial geogrids can reduce aggregate requirements by up to 60%. They are easy to install and can significantly reduce labour and equipment needs.


Nilex was able to save the client time and money by reducing the amount of aggregate needed to stabilize the road base. By installing BX geogrids in conjunction with nonwoven textiles into the road structure, the subgrade was enhanced, creating a solid base for heavy traffic leading into the wind farm site, and minimizing the amount of maintenance required to maintain the road. From an environmental perspective, by using the BX geogrids, not only did RES use less aggregate to build the road, they also significantly reduced the number of trucks hauling the aggregate material to the site.
