Sugar Creek Erosion Protection

Introduction Challenge Solution Installation Results Gallery The Nilex Advantage

SmartDitch™ conforms to rough terrain while offering erosion protection.

Sugar Creek is a tributary to South Platte River — a Gold Medal Western trout river on the Eastern Slope of Colorado. This environmentally sensitive area was experiencing sediment laden discharge from a nearby roadway.

Project Partners

Owner: US Forest Service
Consultant: CH2M Hill
Completion Date: July 2013

Due to site conditions, the client required a solution that would conform to the rough terrain and offer erosion protection with the highly erodible soils at the site while blending in with the surrounding environment.

Nilex recommended SmartDitch, a hard armor solution that would handle the hydraulic velocity from the corrugated metal pipe and prevent erosion on the down drain to the river. SmartDitch would also reduce sediment laden flow into Sugar Creek. The alternative would have been an underground pipe which would take longer to install.

To prevent scour behind the SmartDitch, Nilex helped develop a special interface between the SmartDitch and the 18 inch corrugated metal pipe. Nilex also worked closely with engineers to assess the suitability of SmartDitch for this area and conducted pull-put tests to alleviate concerns that the earth anchors would not hold in loose soils. The install was completed by a crew of three in one day without the need for heavy equipment.

Nilex provided an engineered solution to prevent erosion on a slope application. In comparison to the conventional solution, SmartDitch did not require additional excavation allowing the client to realize additional cost savings. The trial period has lasted the duration of four seasons while offering tremendous protection to the discharge area with no erosion taking place. This project is a pilot program for the US Forest Service in conjunction with the Central Federal Lands and Douglas County.

I want to thank you for getting things organized as quickly as you did for us and for the follow up calls and site visits that allowed us to get this work done and meet our schedule dates for the road work. As well, your product knowledge and ability to provide the technical support when dealing with the consultants was a major help in getting the system approved and installed correctly.
