Highway 491 Lane Expansion

Introduction Challenge Solution Installation Results Gallery The Nilex Advantage

HydraCX™ Extreme Slope Matrix offers optimum vegetation establishment.

Highway 491, which runs along the western edge of New Mexico, was slated for expansion due to increased traffic volumes. The lane expansion would result in several cut slopes requiring re-vegetation in order to meet regulations.

New Mexico

Project Partners

Owner: New Mexico Department of Transportation
Contractor: Skanska, Caldon Seeding & Reclamation
Completion Date: May 2014

The climate in this area is semi-arid and only receives about 9 inches of annual precipitation. With very warm summer temperatures, the client required a mulch and soil amendment solution that would offer optimum vegetation establishment.

HydraCX Extreme Slope Matrix was utilized for the mulch cover while Sustane 3-7-2 with Mycorrihizae was recommended as the soil amendment. HyrdraCX offers the nutrients required to establish growth and Mycorrihizae assists in nutrient and water absorption within the root system.

Two truckloads of HydraCX were installed by a crew of four using a 3,300 gallon hydroseeder. HydraCX is a high loading capacity mulch which allows approximately 20% more per tank load reducing the amount of water required to spray the mulch. Sustane 3-7-2 with Mycorrihizae and Humates was applied at 700 lbs/acre. The project area was approximately 42 acres.

Nilex provided the client with an organic soil amendment solution. The HydraCX required less water per tank load which increased efficiency during application. HydraCX Extreme Slope Matrix and Sustane 3-7-2 with Mycorrihizae offered the climate protection, nutrients and vegetation establishment required by the client.
