City of Hamilton Street Yard Spillway Protection

Introduction Challenge Solution Installation Results Gallery The Nilex Advantage

HydroTurf marries aesthetic appeal with low-maintenance for local street yard.

The City of Hamilton required a re-grading and re-design of the city’s Upper Ottawa Street Works Yard. The overall project included the re-grading of a wet pond stormwater management facility, the re-grading of a site perimeter privacy berm and the re-grading of a fill pile area on the east end of the site.

As part of the project, the City needed to protect a small spillway on the site that was experiencing erosion issues. They required an evergreen solution that would match the surrounding area while also being able to withstand the calculated flow. The City had a number of options available, including riprap; however, riprap can be easily washed out by storm events or high-velocity flows.

Nilex recommended HydroTurf as an alternative solution to riprap and the natural turf being considered by the City. HydroTurf is an engineered turf solution specifically designed to provide armoring of hydraulic structures against high velocity and shear stress while offering the aesthetics of vegetation. It is a permanent hard armoring product that can be used instead of riprap and especially in critical locations like spillways.

For this unique application, HydroTurf requires less maintenance and is resistant to damage from vehicles because it uses a concrete infill. HydroTurf is engineered to last 50 years whereas typical synthetic turf, like that used in residential applications, has a longevity of only about eight years.

The HydroTurf was cut and installed over two working days by a team of six people including a technician. One advantage of HydroTurf is the ease with which it can be installed neatly around existing amenities and the lack of heavy equipment required for this work. Overall, approximately 195m2 of HydroTurf Z was used with 137 bags of HyrdoBinder fill to complete the installation.

Nilex and the manufacturer provided on-site assistance to train the contractor and ensure proper installation.

Nilex was able to provide the City of Hamilton with an engineered synthetic turf solution that would reduce long-term maintenance costs and water usage while providing more reliable aesthetics with greater durability when compared to natural grass or typical synthetic turf. HydroTurf will conserve significant quantities of water and money while beautifying the city.
