HydroTurf provides significant taxpayer savings when used for median landscaping.

The City of Bloomfield, New Mexico was undertaking a major construction project which focused on improving the traffic flow at the high volume intersection of Highway 64 and Highway 550. Bloomfield is located in the Four Corners region of the United States which is known for its hot and arid climate.

As part of the project, several median strips were constructed to contain landscaping. Typically, the maintenance of landscapes require a large amount of water which made water conservation a major concern. The City wanted to reduce the amount of water required to maintain the landscape while keeping its aesthetic appeal.


Nilex recommended HydroTurf as an alternative solution to the natural turf being considered by the city. HydroTurf is an engineered turf solution specifically designed to provide armoring of hydraulic structures against high velocity and shear stress while offering the aesthetics of vegetation.

For this unique application, HydroTurf would require less maintenance and be resistant to damage from vehicles as it uses a concrete infill. It is engineered to last 50 years while typical synthetic turf used in residential or sports applications has a longevity of approximately eight years. The color versatility of HydroTurf also allowed the City to use a combination of green and tan colored turf to best blend in with the surrounding landscape.


The HydroTurf was cut to the variable shapes of the medians and installed over three working days by a team of four people including one day for training. Once the turf was cut to size and pinned into place, the dry concrete infill was placed using a drop spreader. Hand tools including rakes and brooms were used to easily and evenly spread the infill. Finally, the HydroTurf was hydrated with water using a fine mist and left to cure for 24 hours.

Nilex and the manufacturer provided on-site assistance to train the contractor and ensure proper installation.


Nilex was able to provide the City of Bloomfield with an engineered synthetic turf solution that would reduce long-term maintenance costs and water usage while providing more reliable aesthetics with greater durability when compared to natural grass or typical synthetic turf. Bloomfield was the first city in North America to innovatively use HydroTurf in a median landscaping capacity and will conserve significant quantities of water and money while beautifying the city.
