Capitol Reef Resort Expansion

Introduction Challenge Solution Installation Results Gallery The Nilex Advantage

A solution for a complex challenge of stabilizing a very wet and silty subgrade to build log cabins with running water above.

The Capitol Reef Resort was looking for opportunities to maximize usage of their remaining 13,500 square yards of property. They decided to place small log cabins on the available land; however, this area was used for
the high ground water.

With a very soft, silty sand subgrade and high water table, utilizing this land was going to be a challenge. Additionally, with the price of rock in the area being high, a traditional method of subgrade stabilization was cost-prohibitive. Nilex provided a solution that was able to reduce the aggregate and allow for water to move freely between layers.

Nilex produced designs for two separate options. The first option was to use Mirafi’s RS580i High Strength Woven Geotextile, while option number two was to go with the new Mirafi H2Ri Wicking Fabric. With the added
savings of the RS580i fabric, they selected the first solution, saving them significant time and money on gravel installation. Geogrid was not an ideal solution as it would have required two layers in addition to a geotextile because of the very fine clay soils in the area.

A unique challenge of this project was the fact there would be small cabins with their own bathrooms and running water going on top of the ground above the geosynthetic reinforced ground. Installation crews were able to simply make small cuts into the fabric for the water lines to go through. The fabric also served a second purpose – to protect the water lines that were running to the cabin. Installation took only a single day using a four-person crew.

As natural construction materials become scarce and more expensive to locate, transport and place, geotextile products offer a cost effective engineered solution. Mirafi’s RS580i provided superior reinforcement strength and soil interaction integrated with high water flow and soil retention capabilities, perfect for this project.
