Northern Alberta oil sands operation uses Nilex High Temperature PVC & HDPE liners for secondary containment.

The Sunrise oil sands operations, located 60 kilometers northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta, is owned by Husky Energy Inc. and BP, and is designed to produce 60,000 barrels of bitumen per day. The site consists of two plants, each containing five tank farms with liner already under the tanks. Husky needed a contractor with a proven commitment to quality and safety to connect new material to the existing material.

Originally the client requested an estimate on the entire job, however after proposing and conducting an onsite visit, Nilex was able to submit a more detailed estimate, and develop the trust of the client to successfully win the bid.

The existing material under the tanks was buried underneath wood and sand, requiring work to expose enough material to create a satisfactory weld to the new liner.


The Engineer specified a combination of Nilex secondary containment products: Nilex’s High Temperature Isoflex PVC, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane liners with UV protection on the walls, and a 12 oz Nonwoven Geotextile (Nilex 4512) underneath the liner. Isoflex geomembrane liners have very good flexibility, allowing them to be fabricated into large panels and easily folded for delivery to site and deployment.


In multiple spots requiring secondary containment, liners were installed using a zoom boom to load prefabricated panels onto the work site. Other on-site modifications such as field welding were made to tailor the liner to fit the site layout. In total, 11,000 m2 of High Temperature Isoflex PVC, 2,000 m2 of HDPE UV and 11,000 m2 of 12 oz Nonwoven Geotextile (Nilex 4512) were installed on this project.


Nilex provided continuous support to meet schedule demands, bringing in crews from between eight to 14, in addition to an on-site project coordinator. The owner received liners that provide excellent chemical resistance, great ultraviolet protection and resistance to the intense stresses of weather.
