Introduction Challenge Solution Results Gallery The Nilex Advantage

MulchMax Ultra provides outstanding erosion protection, cost savings and safer installation conditions than alternatives.

The Predator Bay Water Ski Club is a private not-for-profit member-run society 10 km (6 miles) south of Calgary, Alberta. The club needed to rebuild their site access road, which runs down a steep hill. Nilex geogrids were used to secure the roadbed and after the original removed soils were returned to the slope at the end of that work, revegetation was required for aesthetics and to improve slope stability.

Challenge

After stabilizing the road, Rolled Erosion Control Blankets (RECBs) were considered for slope revegetation. On a slope this steep, such installations present safety concerns that should be handled by an experienced crew.

Solution

The club had access to a hydroseeder and was willing to use it for this project. Nilex identified MulchMax Ultra as an innovative replacement for RECBs under these site conditions. MulchMax Ultra is a high-performance/high-tensile-strength blend that made the installation safer and more economical than RECBs. Once applied, Ultra is able to drape and contour to the soil, creating ideal conditions for revegetation.

Results

After an initial installation across the steep slope, a second spray was conducted to ensure full coverage. This “heavy mulch” approach — about twice the amount specified to protect against erosion — vegetated normally, with an added benefit that the additional MulchMax membrane was able to defend against airborne weedy invasive species found elsewhere on site.
