The roadside channel section supporting a 15-acre (6 hectare) residential cul-de-sac was experiencing flooding onto the road and adjacent driveways during heavy rains. The choice of riprap for scour protection in the channel was proving problematic due to its thickenss and the large volume it occupied within the channel. The Town of Parker needed a solution with a thinner profile to gain valuable channel flow capacity.

The hallmark of a successful project in a residential area is the ability to limit disruption to homeowners. In Parker, that included maintaining slope stabilization under a precarious driveway, where the existing rock below it couldn’t be removed. Shallow-buried utilities (fiber optic cable, water, gas and electrical), large buried rocks, limited work space, a continuous bend radius throughout the channel, frequent afternoon storms and high water discharge were also key challenges for the installation team.
HyrdroTurf Z offers the aesthetics of vegetation with performance superior to traditional hard armor solutions like riprap. HydroTurf is ideal for installations like the Town of Parker’s, due to its thin profile after installation and need for minimal excavation. HydroTurf arrives on site as rolls of engineered turf and bags of HydroBinder concrete infill. This makes the product ideal for sites with small laydown areas, such as residential neighborhoods. HydroTurf can be installed by small crews with simple tools, or can be mechanized to cover large areas. Weathering tests shows it has a minimum 50 year lifespan.
The only heavy equipment required for the installation were the machines that removed the existing riprap and prepared the soil afterward. The turf mats were trench-anchored at the top after being unrolled; trenching ensures sheet drainage off the road is positively directed into the channel. The crew then used simple tools to cut the mats to accomodate the curves in the channel. Once done, the seams were welded with a heat gun. The HydroBinder was spread using shovels and rakes and activated using hoses from the water truck. The install of 2,000 ft2 (186 m2) took 14 hours over two days. Nilex provided installation training for the crew and was onsite to support them, as required.
HydroTurf provided the Town of Parker with a hydraulically-superior hard armor that increased flow capacity of the 230 ft (70 m) channel.
The lower roughness coefficient (Manning n=0.02) of HydroTurf, compared to riprap (0.05), also reduced the risk of bank overflow.
Given the increasing scarcity of local fill for riprap applications, as well as the logistics and equipment those installs require, HydroTurf is an environmentally superior solution with considerable immediate and long-term benefits for Town officials and residents.
