MulchMax provides full, uniform coverage while quickly establishing vegetation.

Vancouver Airport Authority was developing a luxury designer outlet center at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in partnership with London-based developer McArthurGlen Group — Europe’s leading owner, developer and manager of designer outlets.

Located three minutes from YVR, The McArthurGlen Designer Outlet will feature European and North American luxury, designer and lifestyle brands becoming the first designer outlet in Vancouver’s Metropolitan area.

Consultant: Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd.
Contractor: Jacob Bros., Blue Pine Enterprises
Completion Date: September 2014

Challenge

To accommodate new flood control levels, the dike adjacent to the property needed to be raised resulting in a steeper slope (from 4:1 to 2:1 in some cases) making it more challenging for vegetation establishment. The slope was located at the entrance of the mall, where aesthetics were important, creating a need for temporary erosion protection combined with quick vegetation. The installation had to be completed prior to the rainy, fall season.

Solution

Nilex introduced MulchMax as an alternative to the rolled Erosion Control Blankets (ECBs) initially being considered by the client. MulchMax is a 100% natural, biodegradable hydromulch designed to aid in vegetation establishment and erosion control on bare site soil conditions for flat, moderate and extreme slopes. MulchMax would offer cost benefits over rolled ECBs while expediting vegetation establishment.

Installation

MulchMax is a spray-on application and was applied at a rate of 5,000 kilograms per hectare. Using a portable hydroseeder, the install was completed by two people over two hours. In comparison, the rolled ECBs would have taken 20 hours to install. Nilex was on site during installation.

Results

Working with the consultant, Nilex was able to identify the project requirements and recommend an alternative solution to rolled Erosion Control Blankets. The ease at which MulchMax is applied reduced labour costs and the time required for install. MulchMax provided the client with full, uniform coverage while quickly establishing vegetation.
