Erie SmartDitch Irrigation Solution

Introduction Challenge Solution Installation Results Gallery The Nilex Advantage

A land developer near Erie, Colorado, uses SmartDitch to preserve and improve existing farmland irrigation channels.

It’s a story as old as the nation itself: Farmland slowly gives way to housing as more and more people settle in a popular area. In Colorado, the needed expansion into farmland near the town of Erie required special consideration for the area’s existing farmland irrigation channels.

Owner: Colson Construction
Consultant: Nilex
Completion Date: June 2017

Challenge

It was important to consider water rights owners further along the channel, past the current development; their farms have relied on this channel for generations. To ensure development activities didn’t reduce the function of the current channel, it required lining that would reduce loss through the soil and eliminate water migration.

Solution

Based partly on the size and geometry of the existing soil channel, 12-inch depth SmartDitch was an excellent choice for a liner solution. SmartDitch is made from UV-resistant HDPE, and its corrugated design helps regulate water flow over the channel’s existing grade changes. With some placement advice and on-site training from Nilex, SmartDitch solutions can be installed in sections, with small crews, to accomodate project needs. Unlike other lining solutions, damaged sections can also be replaced individually, with no special equipment. SmartDitch installs with minimal site preparation and remains leak-proof to provide site certainty under changing conditions.

Installation

With installation guidance from Nilex, the contractor crew of three installed 108 sections of 12-inch depth SmartDitch over the course of several weeks. Each section comes with its own installation hardware, so contractor preparation was limited to channel-shaping. This work was sped up by a special bucket attachment for the contractor’s mini-excavator. Although not necessary for the channel-shaping work, the contractor designed this attachment for the ease of their crew.

Results

SmartDitch provides a leak-free channel liner with superior performance, durability and ease of installation. It was a great fit for the continuing residential development within the farmland surrounding Erie, Colorado.
