As part of their annual Street Improvements program, Brooks - a growing community along the TransCanada highway in southeast Alberta - was looking to repave a portion of busy Cassils Road, along with other residential streets, including Lake Newell Crescent, St. Mary’s Crescent, and Aquaduct Drive. Cassils Road is a large feeder road, seeing numerous residential and commercial vehicle passes every day.
Cassils Road faces a higher traffic volume compared to many of the other roads in Brooks as it connects the western residential area of the city to the central downtown/commercial area. The road received an improvement a year earlier, but is already beginning to see ruts at one of the intersections. Because of this, the client was looking for a better solution to extend the service life of the road.
In consultation with the City, Nilex recommended using ACE Fiber, a new type of fibre reinforcement using aramid fibres coated with sasobit wax, to help enhance the asphalt’s performance and improve service life expectancy.
On this particular project, the 38mm version of ACE Fiber was introduced to just over 11,000 tonnes of asphalt using Nilex’s ACE Fiber automated dosing machine which allows for a precise dosing rate over the entirety of the project.
The installation took place in September and took 16 days to complete - slightly longer than anticipated - mainly due to unusually cold and rainy/snowy weather. Nilex was on site with one technician for the dosing at Brooks Asphalt from start to finish, as well as during part of the installation.
ACE Fiber was added into the hot mix asphalt without any modification to the asphalt mix design or placement process. The fibre was added directly to the asphalt right at the mixing plant, so there were no changes required to the asphalt lay down methodology.
The typical service life for this road is 20 years. With the use of ACE Fiber, service life expectancy is anticipated to be much longer.
